OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING

ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 08, 2017 AT APPROXIMATELY 6:16 P.M., THE LEE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE RECEIVED A WELFARE CONCERN CALL AT 1872 CR 424 DIME BOX, TEXAS. THE CALLER INFORMED THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE THAT A SUBJECT WAS LYING NEXT TO HIS TRUCK.

 

OFFICERS ARRIVED AT THE SCENE AND MADE CONTACT WITH THE SUBJECT. THE SUBJECT BECAME CONFRONTATIONAL AND FAILED TO COMPLY WITH OFFICER COMMANDS.  THE SUBJECT ENTERED HIS 2003 CHEVROLET P/U TRUCK AND DROVE THROUGH A CLOSED GATE. THE SUBJECT THEN CONTINUED TOWARDS WHERE DEPUTY HOLLOWAY WAS STANDING, RAMMING THE BACK OF DEPUTY BYRON HOLLOWAY’S PATROL VEHICLE. HOLLOWAY’S PATROL VEHICLE WAS KNOCKED INTO ANOTHER PATROL VEHICLE. THE SUSPECT BACKED UP AND RAMMED DEPUTY HOLLOWAY’S VEHICLE A SECOND TIME.

 

DEPUTY DAVID JESSUP FIRED THREE SHOTS, STRIKING THE SUBJECT TWICE IN THE CHEST.

 

THE SUBJECT WAS IDENTIFIED AS ROBERT LOUIS LUZA, 66 YOA OF BURTON, TEXAS. LUZA WAS TRANSPORTED TO ST JOSEPH HOSPITAL IN BRYAN.

 

A FIREARM WAS FOUND ON THE FRONT SEAT OF THE SUBJECT’S VEHICLE.

 

THE TEXAS RANGERS ARE INVESTIGATING THE SHOOTING.

 

DEPUTY JESSUP HAS BEEN PLACED ON PAID ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE PENDING THE INVESTIGATION.
